EI Associates (EIA) was retained by Empower Energies, Inc. (Empower) to design a new cogeneration system skid and a separate standby generator at the Lifetime Fitness facility in Framingham, MA. The equipment was placed on new concrete foundations located in the rear of the facility and was connected to the building’s electrical switchgear, natural gas system, and heating hot water distribution header. The new equipment provides power to the facility as well as utilizes waste heat from the engine to serve the building heating hot water system. Empower provided the synchronizing equipment on the cogeneration skid.
EI Associates engineered a new recirculating glycol loop which serves to remove waste heat from the cogenerator skid and deliver it to the building thermal load. The cogenerator skid was provided with a dry cooler for heat dump for heat rejection (the building cannot utilize all the thermal production). The total energy production of the new cogeneration system is 263kW. The new ER265UL CHP System generates electricity locally, recycles the waste heat, and uses it to heat water for the facility resulting in cost efficient, reliable, and environmentally friendly energy.
