EI Associates recently completed the design of a new 200,000 sq.ft. BSL-2 vaccine facility located in Thuwal, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The client requested EI Associates to provide Value Engineering services for a bulk vaccine facility to reduce the total installed cost of the original design. EI Associates worked with the client to totally redesign the facility to reduce the construction cost by nearly half while maintaining all of the required production capacity and quality objectives. EI Associates prepared comprehensive detailed design services for the entire facility including mechanical, architectural, structural, civil, electrical, process utilities, fire protection, security and IT infrastructure for the entire grass roots plant. The design includes an economical HVAC system serving the numerous clean room and laboratory functions as well as warehousing, office and support functions. The facility is designed as a Biosafety Level 2 (BSL-2) lab to produce bulk vaccines and has a total floor area over four floors of approximately 50,000 sq.ft. Numerous design features including sunshades, bris de soleil, and an efficient mechanical system designed to address the unique climate conditions in Saudi Arabia. The plant is being constructed of locally available materials to the maximum extent as possible including a reinforced concrete structural frame.
